Marysia Tyski and Michael Nunweiler on Rish Jewelry, From Markets to DTC, Travers Metal and Making Things You'd Want to Wear
Alex and Karen talk with Marysia Tyski, the founder of Rish Jewelry, and her apprentice (and fiancé!) Michael Nunweiler to learn all about their business ventures and the art of jewelry making. Alex and Karen get a rundown of the different jewelry-making processes and dive even further into Marysia and Michael’s own processes for creating their beautiful works, from their sources of inspiration to the craftsmanship that goes into every piece. In addition to speaking about the creative side of their work, they get into the nitty-gritty details of running and growing a business, how their work and partnership has grown and evolved over time, and where they see it going from here. They also share their personal tastes in both jewelry and fashion, and discuss the power that can come from wearing the right pieces. …Follow Marysia @rishjewelryFollow Michael @traversmetalGo to rishjewelry.com and traversmetal.com to view and purchase their beautiful wares!…Follow us on instagram @vicarious.pod Have any questions or topics you want to hear us discuss? Francis Henson on Content vs. Intent, Big Feelings, and Effect of Language on Social Identity

Francis Henson on Content vs. Intent, Big Feelings, and Effect of Language on Social Identity
Alex and Karen are joined this week by musician, writer, teacher and certified fashionista (at least in Karen’s mind) Francis Henson! He brings with him a lot of great topics for them to dive into, like the idea of artistic identity as intent rather than content; our connection to music and art in adolescence; and music as a study of humanity. They explore Francis’ globetrotting childhood that began in The Philippines and brought him to Kazakhstan before ending up here in Vancouver, and talk about what effects that had on his understanding of himself and the world around him. And if that wasn’t enough, they also have a very impassioned discussion about fashion and the trends that they love to hate. …Follow Francis @francishenson and his groups @frankieandthejuicebox and @bigfuzzmusiccheck out his website francishenson.com for more info on his music projects. …Follow us on instagram @vicarious.pod Have any questions or topics you want to hear us discuss? Sam Dowdell and Keely Rammage-Scott on Project Vancity, the Grunt Work of Creativity and Working in Community
Alex and Karen sit down with musicians Sam Dowdell (Emilyn) and Keely Rammage-Scott to talk about their work with The Project Vancity, a music initiative that works toward community building by bringing a variety of musicians in the Vancouver music scene together to create video series, shows, and other creative works. Sam and Keely share how they individually got involved with the project and how it’s evolved since they joined the team, and get into the nitty gritty of what it takes to run a registered non-profit that works with “creative people, not organized people”. They get into so many different aspects of the project, such as the challenges they face working with such a large roster of volunteers; why creating a safe space is at the forefront of the group’s mission; the aspects of the project that are most meaningful for them; and the importance of a vibe check when deciding on who to work with. …Follow Keely Rammage-Scott @keely_leahFollow Sam Dowdell/Emilyn @emilynmakesmusic@samisacoachFollow @theprojectvancity to see what projects and events they’ve got coming up next!…Follow us on instagram @vicarious.pod Have any questions or topics you want to hear us discuss? Kaya Kurz on Garment Making, Chronic Illness, and Being Radicalized By Tumblr
Alex and Karen talk to musician, sewist, arts worker, and all around cool person Kaya Kurz about her life as a multi-faceted artist. Kaya shares her self-described “flukey” journey from music school to her current job working for an arts non-profit, and how her idea to take up sewing as a covid hobby turned into a passion project that has become one of her main forms of artistic expression as well as a tool for both advocacy and community on her Instagram page that chronicles her work. They talk about Kaya’s chronic illness and how that has impacted her creativity, especially in the realm of garment making, and explore many different topics that are connected to the fashion industry, such as fast fashion; anti-fat bias; and the ability or inability to properly express oneself through style. …Follow Kaya:@kaya_sews@the.shorties.music…Follow us on instagram @vicarious.pod Have any questions or topics you want to hear us discuss?
